Systemic Therapy

The terms “family therapy” and “systemic psychotherapy” are often used interchangeably. Systemic psychotherapists work with people in any form of relationship, including couples, families, carers and colleagues.

This type of psychotherapy is based on the idea that each of us is part of a wider network or “system”. Our interactions with other people have an impact on how the system works. So, if a system is problematic then the problem lies within the group as a whole, rather than with a single person.  The aim of a family and/or systemic psychotherapist is to help everyone understand each other, develop new paths of communication, therefore assist in individual self-improvement as well as system improvement.
